Lesson Plan-Grade 1
Lesson Plan Title: Building A Safe School For Everyone
Concept / Topic To Teach: Resilience to Bullying as well as Descalation Skills
Standards Addressed:
· Social Issues Awareness
General Goal(s):
· Students will realize they all share something in common, words hurt them. They will hopefully engage in conversation about their experiences with bullying. In each other it is hoped they confide while taking time to put together their work.
Specific Objectives:
· Students unify and learn that they need to stand up for one another
· Students learn what a bully is and they can do to stop them from bullying
· Students will learn what they can do when bullied
Required Materials:
· “X” amount of frozen juice containers
· Black Marker
· White Paper (scrap paper is fine)
· Handouts that contain a box enclosing half of the page for a drawing and the other half with lines that are entertained by two lead in questions/discussion remarks (I was bullied when… AND This bullying made me feel…)
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):
· Start by asking they know what a bully is and ask them if they have ever been bullied.
· Continue the lesson with a funny yet somewhat personal story about a time when you were bullied and how it affected you (embellish a small bit if necessary to get desired reaction from students).
· From there ask the students if they know what could happen to someone being bullied, add points or correct them if necessary.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
· Give each student an empty frozen juice container (the cylinders)
· Tell them to glue a piece of white paper with their name on the side of the can
· Complete the hand out as colourfully and detailed as they like
· Once completed they can put it in the can and build on top of other cans or start the tower/pyramid of cans
Plan For Independent Practice:
· Students will be encouraged to take part in a peers are leaders program where they will learn that they can stop bullying by looking out for their friends.
· Students create a badge to show they are a leading peer out construction paper and anything else they feel suits them.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
· Talk to them about being there for one another
· Have them realize that bullies are not just bad but they are sometimes misunderstood and need to be loved versus hated or segregated.
Assessment Based On Objectives:
· Students will get graded for their participation on the tower and badge
· Students will get graded on their working with others during the filling out of their handouts
Possible Connections To Other Subjects:
· Literature/Comprehension
· Religion
